Each NFL team plays 17 regular season games over an 18-week schedule (each team has one bye week). NFL players need a full week between games to recover from the inflammation, soft tissue damage and neurological effects of each contest. Even with a week between games, the average NFL career lasts just 3.3 years due to the physical toll.

Each team receives one bye week during the 18-week schedule, giving players a full week off from competition. The bye week placement significantly affects team performance: studies have shown that teams coming off a bye win approximately 55% of their next game, a meaningful advantage in a sport where small edges compound across a season. Teams playing on Thursday after a short week, by contrast, win only about 46% of the time.
