How Many Bones Does a Dog Have?

The average dog has about 319 bones, though the number varies by breed and individual. A dog born with a long tail may have up to 323 bones, while a naturally bob-tailed breed might have as few as 315. Puppies start with even more bones that gradually fuse together as they grow, similar to human babies (who are born with about 270 bones that fuse into 206 by adulthood).

Compared to humans (206 bones), dogs have significantly more. The extra bones are mostly in the spine and tail. A dog's spine has about 30 vertebrae from skull to tail base, plus 6 to 23 additional tail vertebrae depending on breed. That tail alone accounts for much of the variation between breeds. Greyhounds and German Shepherds have long tails with 20+ vertebrae. French Bulldogs and Corgis have naturally short tails with as few as 6-8.

The most interesting difference between dog and human skeletons: dogs do not have collarbones (clavicles). Or rather, they have a tiny vestigial sliver of one that is not connected to any other bone. This gives their shoulders extraordinary forward range of motion, which is why dogs can run with that long, reaching stride. It is also why dogs can squeeze through gaps that seem too narrow for their body. No rigid collarbone means their chest can compress.
