Summer officially starts on the summer solstice, which falls on June 20 or 21 in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the longest day of the year, when the Earths axial tilt points the Northern Hemisphere most directly toward the sun.
☀️ What Is the Summer Solstice?
The word "solstice" comes from the Latin "sol" (sun) and "sistere" (to stand still). On the solstice, the sun appears to pause at its highest point in the sky before beginning its gradual return southward. In places above the Arctic Circle, the sun doesnt set at all.
☀️ When Does It Actually Start Feeling Like Summer?
"Summer" as a season and summer as warm weather are two different things. Meteorological summer starts on June 1, which better aligns with temperature patterns. Many parts of the US feel distinctly summery by late May, while the astronomical solstice in late June means summer "officially" starts when it already feels like its been going for weeks.
☀️ How Long Is the Longest Day of the Year?
On the summer solstice, the longest day ranges from about 14 hours in southern states to over 16 hours in northern states like Maine and Washington. In Fairbanks, Alaska, the sun is up for nearly 22 hours. At the Arctic Circle, the sun doesnt set at all. The exact length depends on your latitude.
🏖️ When Does Summer Break Start?
School summer breaks in the US typically start between late May and mid-June, depending on the state and district. Southern states tend to start and end earlier (late May to early August), while northeastern states often go from late June to early September. The concept of a long summer break originally came from the agrarian calendar, when children were needed to help with farming.
