Winter officially begins on the winter solstice, around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the shortest day of the year, with some northern cities getting fewer than 8 hours of daylight.
❄️ Why Is Winter Cold?
Despite what many people think, winter is not cold because Earth is farther from the sun. In fact, the Northern Hemisphere is actualy closest to the sun in January. The cold comes from the axial tilt: the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun in winter, meaning sunlight hits at a lower angle and for fewer hours, delivering less warmth per square meter.
🏛️ How Have Humans Celebrated the Winter Solstice?
The solstice has been marked for thousands of years. Newgrange in Ireland (built around 3200 BC) was designed so that sunlight floods the inner chamber only at dawn on the winter solstice. Stonehenge aligns with the setting sun on the solstice. Christmas, Hanukkah, Yule and many other winter celebrations are rooted in solstice traditions of light overcoming darkness.
❄️ How Cold Does Winter Get?
The coldest temperatues in winter vary enormously by location. In Fairbanks, Alaska, average January temperatures hit minus 17°F (-27°C). In Minneapolis, the average January low is 6°F (-14°C). In Miami, winter lows rarely drop below 60°F (15°C). Globally, the coldest inhabited place is Oymyakon, Russia, which recorded minus 90°F (-67.7°C) in 1933. Most of the Northern Hemispheres coldest weather actually comes in January and February, well after the December solstice.
😴 Does Winter Affect Your Mood?
About 10 million Americans suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression triggered by reduced sunlight during winter months. Another 10 to 20% experience a milder form called the "winter blues." The condition is most common in northern latitudes where winter days are shortest. Light therapy boxes that mimic natural sunlight are one of the most effective treatments, along with regular exercise and maintaining social connections.
