How Many People Are in the World?

As of 2026, roughly 8.2 billion people live on Earth. To put that number in perspective: if you counted one person per second, it would take you about 260 years to count everyone alive right now.

The world population grows by about 140 people every minute. That is roughly 200,000 per day, or about 67 million per year. But the growth rate is actually slowing down. In the 1960s, the world population was growing at 2.1% per year. Today, it is about 0.8% and falling. The United Nations projects that the population will peak around 10.3 to 10.4 billion in the 2080s and then begin to decline.

The decline in growth is driven by falling fertility rates. In 1950, the average woman had 5 children. Today, the global average is about 2.3. A fertility rate of 2.1 is needed just to maintain a stable population (called "replacement level"). More than half the world's countries are now below this threshold, including most of Europe, East Asia, and parts of the Americas.

India (1.45 billion), China (1.42 billion), United States (340 million), Indonesia (280 million), Pakistan (240 million), Nigeria (230 million), Brazil (216 million), Bangladesh (173 million), Russia (144 million), and Ethiopia (130 million).

India passed China as the world's most populous country in April 2023. China's population has actually started shrinking, losing about 2 million people in 2023, its first decline in over 60 years. This is driven by ultra-low fertility rates (about 1.0 children per woman) and the lasting effects of the one-child policy.

📈 Will the World Population Keep Growing?

Africa is the only continent where rapid population growth is expected to continue. Nigeria alone is projected to reach 375 million people by 2050, potentially surpassing the US. Sub-Saharan Africa's population could double by 2050.

Meanwhile, countries like Japan, South Korea, and much of Europe face the opposite problem: populations that are aging and shrinking. Japan's population peaked at 128 million in 2010 and has been declining ever since. By 2100, it could drop below 75 million.

If every person on Earth stood shoulder to shoulder, the entire human race would fit within the 1,302 km² of Los Angeles. Each person takes up about 0.15 square meters standing, so 8 billion people need roughly 1.2 billion square meters, or 1,200 km². The Earth feels crowded because of how we spread out, build infrastructure and consume resources, not because of our physical size. The planet is overwhelmingly empty by human body standards.
