India has a population of approximately 1.47 billion people, making it the most populous country on Earth. India overtook China in April 2023 and the gap is widening: India adds about 12 million people per year while China's population is now shrinking. One in every 5.7 humans is Indian.
India's demographic story is one of extremes. The fertility rate has dropped dramatically from 5.9 in 1950 to about 2.0 today, just below replacement level. But because of population momentum (the massive young generation already born will continue having children), the population will keep growing until at least 2060, when it is projected to peak around 1.7 billion. The south of India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka) already has below-replacement fertility and aging populations, while the north (Bihar, Uttar Pradesh) still has fertility rates above 3.0. India is essentially two demographic worlds in one country.
India is also staggeringly young. The median age is 29.5 years. Over 600 million Indians are under 30. This "demographic dividend" is either India's greatest opportunity (a massive young workforce) or its greatest threat (hundreds of millions needing jobs, education, and housing in the next two decades). Which it becomes depends entirely on policy choices being made right now.

If Uttar Pradesh were a country, it would be the 5th most populous in the world (231 million, more than Brazil). Bihar has fertility rates comparable to sub-Saharan Africa. Kerala has fertility rates comparable to Scandinavia. The national average hides enormous internal variation.
