There are over 10,000 active satellites orbiting Earth right now, and the number is increasing by about 2,000 per year. The majority of that growth is a single company: SpaceX, whose Starlink internet constellation alone accounts for more than 6,000 satellites. Before Starlink's first launch in 2019, the total number of active satellites worldwide was about 2,000. One company quintupled the satellite population of Earth in five years.

If you count all trackable objects in orbit (not just active satellites), the number jumps to over 35,000. That includes dead satellites, rocket stages, and debris fragments. There are an estimated 130 million pieces of debris smaller than 1 cm that cannot be tracked but are still dangerous. At orbital speeds (28,000 km/h), a paint fleck can crack a space station window, and a 1-cm bolt can deliver the energy of a hand grenade.

The first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, launched in 1957 and orbited for 3 months before burning up. It was the size of a beach ball. Today's satellites range from CubeSats the size of a bread loaf to the International Space Station (109 meters wide, 420,000 kg). Between those extremes, there are weather satellites, GPS satellites, spy satellites, communication satellites, Earth observation satellites, and scientific instruments studying everything from dark matter to crop health.

SpaceX's Starlink constellation accounts for over 60% of all active satellites in orbit. The company has permission to launch up to 12,000 satellites and has applied for up to 42,000. The goal is global broadband internet coverage, particularly in rural and remote areas where traditional infrastructure doesnt reach. Each Starlink satellite weighs about 260 kg and orbits at roughly 550 km altitude.
